Beauty is only skin deep – at least that’s what beautiful people say. For Patrick, the world takes on a darker meaning after a disfiguring accident when he is submerged into a new world – a world of stares and whispers, sympathy and hollow charity. But as those around him move on from his accident he realizes he cannot. He soon finds himself obsessed with others’ appearances.
In Patrick’s head, the innocent boy of his youth lives on unharmed, and it is his laughter that floats through a mental maze of dark corridors and locked bedrooms. But on the outside it has become unsafe to be around Patrick and finally, it is only this confession that reveals his hidden secret – a haunting and consuming struggle between a beauty that is skin deep and an ugly that goes all the way to the bone.
